Midterm elections decide every seat in the U.S. House of Representatives and a portion of the U.S. Senate. They also include major state and local races. The rules are not identical everywhere, so the smartest move is to verify your information early through official state sources.
1. Confirm that you are registered
Do not assume an old registration is still current after a move, name change, long period of inactivity, or address update. USAGov links voters to state registration-status tools.
2. Check your deadline
Every state sets its own registration rules and deadline. USAGov notes that every state except North Dakota requires voter registration, and some deadlines may fall as much as a month before an election.
3. Review the way you plan to vote
Early voting, absentee voting, vote-by-mail rules, and Election Day hours vary by state. If you need a mail ballot, request it early and follow the signature and return instructions carefully.
4. Verify identification requirements
Use your state election office—not a social-media graphic—to determine which identification is accepted. If you lack the required document, check the official remedy before the deadline.
5. Preview your ballot
Federal races get attention, but state constitutional amendments, judges, sheriffs, school boards, prosecutors, and local bonds can directly affect taxes, public safety, education, and property rights. Read the full ballot before voting day.
